Under 17's Workshop

In a recent interview, Jim spoke about his new "Under 17's" workshop, that's specifically designed to meet the needs of young drummers.

This Under 17's workshop is a 'hands-on', interactive workshop that is aimed at helping young drummers develop their drumming skills and general musicianship. I encourage a friendly, non- competitive atmosphere in which everyone can learn. Each workshop lasts for two hours (with a short break half-way through) so there's time to learn lots of new skills.

At the start of each workshop, participants are asked to name the specific areas that they would like help with. We all agree on the areas to focus on. I have handouts prepared for the most common areas that participants want to cover, and a PowerPoint presentation to accompany the handouts. Everyone brings a practice pad and sticks, so we can work on things together. It's a real 'hands-on' experience, but with no pressure. We're all there to learn.

Typical questions that participants ask are:" How do I develop my speed?", " How do I play better fill-ins?" "How do I work on playing more evenly?" " How do I figure out what to play with the bass player?" And " How can I develop my double stroke rolls?".

My goal is to make the information we cover totally relevant for the members of each specific group. I want each participant to come away from the workshop feeling inspired, and with material he or she can really use. It's a great opportunity for participants to develop their drumming skills and to get some one-on-one help.

I've been able to take these Workshops to some Regional areas, something I've wanted to do for a long time. I like bringing this information to people who might otherwise find it hard to get. Often we run a more advanced workshop following the Under 17's workshop, and people who are really keen sometimes do both. Much of what I teach is information I have learned from my teachers: Joe Morello, Ed Soph, Murray Spivack and Graham Morgan. It's such a pleasure to pass this material on.
